The 2022 Day of Community Action

“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”

Martin Luther King, Jr. in Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story
Chapter XI: Where Do We Go From Here?

Group Leaders

We are looking for leaders to guide our group through the service activities and facilitate our group reflections. Serving as a group leader involves the following:

  • Welcoming other students and helping orient the Day’s activities,
  • Leading students in-service day activities, and
  • Facilitating moments of reflection before, during, and after the service.

Group leaders will be supporting a service-learning program that commemorates Dr. King’s vision of a compassionate and person-oriented society. A brief orientation and facilitation resources will be provided to all leaders from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on that day; lunch will be provided for all group leaders. For questions, please contact University Chaplain Elyse Nelson Winger.

The annual event is intended to give students an opportunity to promote a sense of belonging and connection with other Tufts community members, critically engage with MLK’s vision of a “revolution of values” towards a “person-oriented society, explore personal values in connection to living in community at Tufts and in our local communities, and create space and a model for building thoughtful connections with Boston-area community members. The program challenges participants to consider, "How do you put your values into action?" In past events, students have participated in on-site service on MLK Day, in partnership with local organizations. You can read more about past programs by following the links below.
