June 2016 Carillon Tune
Tuesday, May, 31st, 2016 Carillon Tune Past Programs 2015-16
This month’s tune radiating from the Goddard Chapel carillon is “When the Summer Sun Is Shining,” a seasonal hymn from the Unitarian Universalist tradition. Beautifully evoking the sensory experience of the summer months, the text by Sydney Henry Knight is traditionally paired with a tune from the American shape-note tradition entitled “Holy Manna.” One of the oldest American hymn tunes, Holy Manna was first published in Columbian Harmony (1829).
The text is here:
When the summer sun is shining over golden land and sea,
And the flowers in the meadow welcome butterfly and bee;
Then my open heart is glowing, full of warmth for everyone,
And I feel an inner beauty, which reflects the summer sun.
In the cool of summer evening, when the dancing insects play,
And in garden, street, and meadow linger echoes of the day;
Then my heart is full of yearning; hopes and mem’ries flood the whole
Of my being, reaching inwards to the corners of my soul.
