Annual MLK University Celebration: Moving the Movement Forward
Tuesday, January 26, 2016, 4:30 pm, Goddard Chapel
Each year, Tufts University hosts an annual celebration honoring the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. For this year’s celebration, we examined the roots of today’s activism through the lens of Dr. King and his contemporaries. We put their voices in conversation with modern scholars and student activists to reflect on how today’s generation is moving the movement forward. The event featured musical performances, spoken word, and reflections on some of the key concerns of Dr. King’s legacy, including faith, equality, unity/collective healing, justice, and action. See below for a video recording of the 2016 MLK University Celebration.
Project Got Your Back Donation Drive
January 21, 2016 – February 12, 2016
Approximately 800,000 children every year come in contact with the foster care system. Often times, when a child must be removed from their home, and placed with a foster family, their belongings are packed into a plastic shopping bag or not taken at all—psychologically symbolic of being thrown out in a moment when love and concern is most needed. “Project Got Your Back” is being organized in response to this local need by having a backpack drive to support the displaced children in our local community during their time of need. The collected items will be distributed to the Department of Children & Families in Cambridge, MA as a part of the 2016 Tufts University programs honoring the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
