Summer Carillon Tune

The current carillon tune, Lasst uns erfreuen (“Let us rejoice”) comes from a 1623 German hymnal, and was originally composed as an Easter melody. It acquired a more universal text in the early 20th century, when Anglican priest William Draper paraphrased St. Francis of Assisi’s poem Canticle of the Sun, beginning with the phrase “All Creatures of our God and King.” The poem, which is itself a paraphrase of Psalm 148, celebrates all living and natural elements of the earth and calls on them to praise their maker.
