“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”
Martin Luther King, Jr. in Stride Toward Freedom: The Montgomery Story Chapter XI: Where Do We Go From Here?
How do you put your values into action? Join fellow Tufts students in reflecting and acting on this question during our 7th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Community Action (formerly known as Day of Service) on Saturday, February 5, 2022 from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. EST. This year, we will be partnering with local community organizations to participate in meaningful action. The day will include community building, working on action items with local community organizations, and reflection with a grab-n-go dinner provided. The resources we will create include:
Greeting cards for folks who are incarcerated in Mass, and
Essential kits for women and transgender people who are unhoused at this time.
These supplies support the work of organizations throughout the Greater Boston area, including Black and Pink MA, On the Rise, and more.
Registration is required and closes at 11:59 P.M. on Thursday, Feb 3. Sign up and learn more here. Spots are limited. For questions, please contact Shelby.Carpenter@tufts.edu.
We are looking for leaders to guide our group through the service activities and facilitate our group reflections. Serving as a group leader involves the following:
Welcoming other students and helping orient the Day’s activities,
Leading students in-service day activities, and
Facilitating moments of reflection before, during, and after the service.
Group leaders will be supporting a service-learning program that commemorates Dr. King’s vision of a compassionate and person-oriented society. A brief orientation and facilitation resources will be provided to all leaders from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on that day; lunch will be provided for all group leaders.
The annual event is intended to give students an opportunity to promote a sense of belonging and connection with other Tufts community members, critically engage with MLK’s vision of a “revolution of values” towards a “person-oriented society, explore personal values in connection to living in community at Tufts and in our local communities, and create space and a model for building thoughtful connections with Boston-area community members. The program challenges participants to consider, "How do you put your values into action?" In past events, students have participated in on-site service on MLK Day, in partnership with local organizations. You can read more about past programs by following the links below.
