A Concert to Benefit Yida Refugee Camp
“Hunger is a Civil Rights Issue” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King
The Chapel was alive last Saturday night at our benefit concert to help raise awareness and money for the Yida Refugee Camp in Sudan. Attended by over 100 people, students from some of Tufts’ a cappella groups including the Jackson Jills, Ladies of Essence, and S-Factor, as well as soloist Barbara Florvil and Fletcher School student Patrick Kabanda, gave beautiful, heartfelt and moving performances. The Rev. Dr. Gloria White-Hammond, humanitarian and a Sudan activist, spoke to us and gave us a clear window into the life of a Sudanian refugee. Her words were inspirational and sobering.
The event was co-sponsored by the Africana Center, the Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, and Muslim Chaplains, the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, the Office of Intercultural & Social Identities Program, the Peace & Justice, Studies Program, and the Tisch College of Active Citizenship and Public Service.
We are very thankful for all who participated in making this concert a success and helping us to raise $3000.

A-Caroling We Went
The Tufts Carolers were out in force on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, stopping at a few locations on campus, spreading Christmas song and cheer. Thank you for all who participated and who encouraged our humble group. We hope you enjoyed it. Merry Christmas.
Chaplains Table
On October 4, 2012, Associate Professor Kelly Gallagher, from the Fletcher School, spoke at our Chaplain’s Table on Religion and the Presidential Election: Major Ethical Issues, on her topic: “Climate and the Enviorment and the Presidential Election”. It was a wonderful perspective and was well received and appreciated.
On Thursday, October 18, 2012, Reverend James Shaughnessy, who is the Catholic Chaplain at Tufts Medical Center, spoke at our Chaplain’s Table on Religion and the Presidential Election: Major Ethical Issues, on his topic: “The Presidential Election and the Ethics of Healthcare”. It was a well-attended event and very informative and thought-provoking. Thank you Rev. Shaughnessy and all who attended for their participation in our program.
On October 25, 2012, Rev. Patricia Budd Kepler, University Chaplain ad Interim spoke on her topic: “The Presidential Election and Feminist Issues”. The conversation was thought provoking and sincere.
On Thursday, November 1, 2012, Dr. John Barker, Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Students, spoke on the topic: “Racial and Ethnic Issues in the Presidential Election”.
On November 8, 2012, George Scarlett, Senior Lecturer in Child Development, spoke at our Chaplain’s Table on the topic: “Democratic Education: Educating Children to be Citizens for a Just, Caring and Inclusive Society”. The discussion was well received and attended.
On November 15, 2012, Naila Baloch, Tufts Muslim Chaplain, lead a panel discussion entitled: “International Student Perspectives on the Presidential Election”.
On November 29, 2012, Tufts Jewish Chaplain and Executive Director of Tufts Hillel Rabbi Jeffrey Summit, spoke on the topic: “Individual Values and National Policies”.
Parents Weekend Ecumenical Prayer Service
During Parents Weekend this past weekend, Catholic Chaplain Lynn Cooper and Protestant Chaplain Rachael Pettengill-Rasure held their first Parents Weekend Ecumenical Prayer Service at 11 am Sunday morning. The service was well attended and many parents expressed gratitude regarding the beautiful, thoughtful service.

Round Table Discussion
November 27, 2012 at the Interfaith Center, the University Chaplaincy and C.A.F.E. (Conversation, Action, Faith & Education) co-hosted a dinner discussion regarding “Sex and Soul”. It was well attended and a very honest, open discussion. Thank you to all who attended.
