Madalyn Murray O’Hair was a prominent separation of church and state activist and founder of the national organization American Atheists. A controversial figure in her time and still today, she is the subject of the new Netflix film, “The Most Hated Woman in America,” titled after the moniker Life magazine assigned to O’Hair in 1963 and starring Melissa Leo.

The film itself has been met with significant controversy, including from the American Atheists organization itself. Former AA president Frank Zindler has published a review of the film challenging a lot of the factual claims of the story as told through the film and characterizing its dramatization as “blaming the victim” for tragic fate of O’Hair and her family. Nonetheless, we want to come together and offer the film a thoughtful, potentially critical treatment and consider its implications.

Join us and the Humanist Community at Tufts for a screening of the new film and a discussion about gender, atheism, and religion in public life. Pizza will be served, all are welcome!
